How to Recover deleted Photos, Videos and Files From Your Phone
You delete a photo. It disappears from your gallery. But what exactly happened to the file? The honest answer is: it depends — on where the photo lived, whether it was backed up, and what your phone did in the seconds after you tapped delete.
Can deleted photos sometimes be recovered? Yes, sometimes — but recovery depends heavily on where another copy of the data exists and how your device handled the deletion. This guide walks through the legitimate, official recovery pathways available to you on your own device and your own accounts, explains why modern phones behave very differently from the hard drives that gave rise to the old "nothing is ever really deleted" myth, and is honest about the cases where recovery simply isn't possible.

This article covers recovering your own data from devices and accounts you own or are authorised to access. It does not — and will not — explain how to bypass a passcode, defeat encryption, access someone else's phone, or extract data without authorisation. If you need to access a device that belonged to someone who has died, or you suspect someone else's account or device has been compromised, that is a legal and forensic question, not a do-it-yourself recovery task — see the "When Should You Contact a Professional" section below.
Modern smartphones rarely store a photo in just one place. A single image can exist, at different moments, in local storage, an app's private database, a cloud backup, a "recently deleted" folder, a messaging app's media folder, or a synced copy on another device. So before opening a recovery app, the first question shouldn't be "what software do I install?" It should be:
"Where might another copy of this data still exist?"

Before You Try Recovery: Stop Using the Phone
The single most useful thing you can do in the first few minutes after realising something important is missing is also the simplest: stop using the device more than necessary.
Here's why that matters. On flash-based storage — the type used in essentially all modern smartphones — deleting a file does not necessarily erase it instantly at the physical level. But every photo you take, every app update, every cache refresh, and every automatic sync is an opportunity for the system to write new data into space the operating system now considers "free." Persistence of deleted data on flash storage depends on factors including the garbage-collection process, the TRIM command, the flash media type, the manufacturer, the file system, and the operating system in use.
Practical steps for the first hour:
- Avoid unnecessary activity. Don't take new photos, install new apps, or do a large download right away.
- Don't install random "100% recovery" apps immediately. Installing new software writes new data to the device and may not deliver what it promises.
- Do not factory-reset the device. This is one of the most common — and most damaging — mistakes people make when panicking over lost data.
- Check backups first. Often the fastest path back to your photo is a cloud account, not a recovery tool.
- If the data is genuinely irreplaceable — legal evidence, the only copy of a once-in-a-lifetime photo — consider a reputable professional data-recovery service rather than trial-and-error apps.
🔎 The forensic point
Exact recoverability is never a single yes/no answer. It depends on the phone's storage technology, its operating system and encryption scheme, its backup configuration, and what has happened on the device since the deletion. Anyone who promises guaranteed recovery without knowing these details is guessing.
Step 1: Check "Recently Deleted" / Trash
Most photo and file apps today don't delete instantly — they move the item to a temporary holding area first.
iPhone
The Photos app keeps a Recently Deleted album. If you accidentally deleted a photo or video, you can recover it within 30 days from the Recently Deleted album by unlocking the album with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode, selecting the item, and tapping Recover. Deleted photos and videos are kept in Recently Deleted for 30 days before being permanently removed from all devices, and during that time you can recover or permanently remove them. The same 30-day album exists on iCloud.com under Photos.
Android
Android has no single, universal recycle bin — recovery options differ by app and by manufacturer. Google Photos keeps deleted items in its Bin for roughly 60 days, while Files by Google keeps deleted items in its own Trash for roughly 30 days, and emptying one does not empty the other. If a backed-up photo or video is deleted, it stays in the Google Photos trash for 60 days; if it was never backed up, it is permanently deleted after 30 days.
Many manufacturers layer their own trash on top of this. On Samsung devices, files deleted from the Gallery app are kept in the trash for 30 days, after which they are permanently deleted and cannot be recovered. Samsung's Trash feature, present across apps such as My Files and Gallery, also temporarily stores deleted items for 30 days before automatic permanent deletion. Other OEMs (OnePlus, Xiaomi, Oppo and others) implement similar but differently named "Recycle Bin" features — always check the specific menu wording on your device rather than assuming it matches a generic guide.
⚠️ Do not assume every Android phone works the same way
Retention windows, menu names and even the existence of a trash feature vary by Android version, manufacturer skin, and app version. A step that works on a Samsung Galaxy phone may not exist in the same form on a Pixel, a Xiaomi phone, or an older Android build.
Step 2: Check Google Photos
A photo missing from your phone's local gallery may still exist safely in your Google Photos library, entirely independent of what's on the device itself.
- Check the Bin/Trash first. Photos and videos in the trash are permanently deleted after sixty days if they were backed up, or thirty days if they weren't, so if the missing item is still in the trash it can be restored.
- Check Archive. Archived items are hidden from the main grid but not deleted — moving an item to Archive keeps it visible in any albums it belongs to, in search results, and in on-device folders, so an "archived" photo can look missing when it isn't.
- Confirm you're signed into the correct Google Account. If multiple Google accounts are used on the same device, a photo can appear "gone" simply because Photos is displaying a different account's library.
- Confirm backup was actually turned on at the time the photo was taken — Google Photos can only protect what it was actively backing up.
The key distinction to hold onto: a photo can disappear from a phone's local storage — say, after a factory reset or accidental deletion in a file manager — while still existing safely in the associated Google Photos account, because the cloud copy and the local file are not the same object.
Step 3: Check iCloud Photos and Apple Backups
iPhone offers several distinct recovery layers, and it's important not to conflate them.
iCloud Photos vs. iCloud Backup — they are not the same thing
iCloud Photos automatically uploads your photos and videos to iCloud so they stay up to date across your devices, and they are not duplicated inside your iCloud Backup. iCloud Backup, by contrast, is a periodic snapshot of the data on your device that is not already synced elsewhere — when you use iCloud Photos, your photos sync separately and so are not included in the daily backup. In practice this means:
- If iCloud Photos is ON, your photo library lives independently in iCloud and syncs across devices — it is not stored a second time inside your device backup.
- If iCloud Photos is OFF, your photo library (as it exists on the device) can instead be captured inside your periodic iCloud device backup.
This matters for recovery strategy: if iCloud Photos was on, look in the Photos app / iCloud.com; if it was off, an iCloud device-backup restore may be your route back — but only for photos captured up to that backup's date.
Recovery pathways
- Recently Deleted (30 days) — covered above.
- iCloud Photos (if enabled) — sign in to iCloud.com or check another Apple device signed into the same account; the library should mirror what was on the phone.
- Restoring from an iCloud (or computer) backup — this can bring back a photo that existed at the time of that backup, but restoring an entire device backup replaces current data on the device with the backed-up state. Understand this trade-off before proceeding: recent messages, app data, or settings created after the backup date may be overwritten.
⚠️ "Permanently deleted" generally means permanently deleted
Apple's own support guidance and community moderation are consistent on this: once an item is removed from Recently Deleted, or the 30-day window lapses, official recovery is not possible through Apple's consumer tools. Be sceptical of any service claiming to reverse this through unofficial means.
Step 4: Check the Phone's File Manager
Not every photo, video or document lives inside a gallery app. Files saved by browsers, messaging apps, scanning apps, or manually moved by the user often sit in general-purpose folders that a gallery app never indexes.
On Android, worth checking (via Files by Google, Samsung My Files, or the built-in file manager):
- DCIM — the default folder for camera photos and videos
- Downloads — anything saved from a browser, chat app, or email
- Documents / Pictures / Movies — general-purpose media folders
- App-specific folders where accessible (e.g., a screenshot tool's own save directory)
Android's folder layout and how accessible it is has changed significantly across versions — scoped storage rules introduced in recent Android releases restrict what one app can see inside another app's private folder, so a folder that was Browse-able on an older phone may not be visible the same way on a newer one. On iPhone, the Files app is intentionally more restricted; it surfaces iCloud Drive, on-device app folders that opt in, and connected storage providers, but it does not expose a full raw filesystem browser the way Android's file managers can.
Step 5: Check Messaging and Social Apps
A photo you deleted from your gallery may still exist as an attachment inside a messaging app, because these apps frequently keep their own separate copy in their own storage area rather than only referencing the gallery file.
On Android, WhatsApp is a common example: media received or sent through chats is typically saved into its own media folder on device storage, independent of the phone's main gallery. If a photo was removed from the gallery but was originally sent or received via WhatsApp, checking that app's own media directory (or the app's chat-level media view) is worth doing before assuming it's gone. The same logic applies to Telegram, email attachments, and other chat apps — but exactly what is retained, for how long, and whether it syncs to a cloud backup depends entirely on that specific app's settings and version.
Availability always depends on the individual application, its backup configuration, its sync status, and how the content was deleted (e.g., deleted only from the chat vs. "delete for everyone" vs. deleted from device storage directly). This guide does not cover accessing another person's messages or media — only your own device and your own accounts.
Step 6: Check Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox and Other Cloud Services
If a photo or document was ever uploaded, shared, or backed up to a general cloud storage service — separately from your photo-specific cloud service — that's another independent recovery pathway.
- Cloud recycle bins. Google's My Drive Trash, for example, automatically deletes items after they've sat in the trash for 30 days, mirroring the pattern used by most major cloud storage providers.
- Multi-device sync. A file deleted on your phone but still present (and not yet synced-deleted) on a linked computer or tablet may still be retrievable from that other device.
- Shared folders and version history — some services, particularly business-tier cloud storage, retain older versions of a file even after a newer version overwrites it; this varies by provider and plan.
Retention periods are not uniform across services, and even within one provider they can change over time or depend on account type — always check that specific service's current help documentation rather than assuming a fixed number of days.
Step 7: Check External Copies
Sometimes the fastest, safest route back to a lost file has nothing to do with the phone at all.
- A computer that the phone was ever connected to or backed up on
- An external hard drive or USB storage device
- An SD card (if the phone supports removable storage and the photo was saved there)
- An old phone that the photo was originally captured on, before a transfer
- Shared albums that other people contributed to or that you shared the photo into
- Email attachments — if the photo was ever emailed to yourself or someone else
- Any deliberately exported copy — printed, shared to social media, or saved to another app
An external copy, when one exists, is almost always more reliable than attempting technical recovery from the phone's internal storage — it avoids all the uncertainty around encryption, TRIM, and overwriting discussed below.
Step 8: What About Data-Recovery Apps?
This is the step people usually want to jump to first — and the one that needs the most caution.
What recovery apps can sometimes do
On older Android devices, or storage that hasn't been encrypted with modern file-based encryption, some recovery tools can scan unallocated space and attempt to reconstruct file fragments that the operating system no longer references but that haven't yet been overwritten. This is a real, legitimate technique, and it can occasionally work — particularly soon after deletion and before much new data has been written.
What recovery apps cannot magically do
- They cannot bypass modern app sandboxing. Android's storage permission model and scoped storage restrict what a third-party app is even allowed to read.
- They cannot easily defeat file-based encryption. On current-generation Android and iOS devices, files are encrypted individually with keys tied to the user's credentials — Android's file-based encryption allows different files to be encrypted with different keys that can be unlocked independently, which is very different from the "one key for the whole disk" model that older recovery techniques were designed around.
- They cannot reliably reverse TRIM/garbage-collection on flash storage. More on this in the next section.
- They cannot guarantee a result. No legitimate tool can promise 100% recovery, because the underlying data may simply no longer physically exist.
⚠️ Choosing a tool
Stick to well-established, mainstream applications with a transparent developer and a realistic description of their limitations. Avoid anything demanding invasive permissions, promising guaranteed 100% recovery, or requiring you to disable standard security protections to "work properly." This guide does not recommend or endorse specific third-party recovery applications, and does not provide instructions for bypassing Android or iOS security to enable them.
Why Modern Phones Are Harder to Recover From Than Old Phones
The oft-repeated internet advice — "deleted files stay on the disk until overwritten" — was true, more or less, for the spinning magnetic hard drives common a generation ago. It is an oversimplification for today's smartphones, for several concrete reasons.
Flash storage behaves differently from magnetic storage
Old hard drives (HDDs) simply marked a file's space as "free" and left the actual bits in place until something else happened to be written over that exact spot — sometimes never. Flash storage (used in virtually all phones today) works on a fundamentally different mechanism involving blocks, pages, wear-levelling, and garbage collection. Empirical testing has shown that without TRIM active, nearly all deleted data on flash storage remains recoverable, but with TRIM enabled only a fraction of blocks — in one study up to roughly 27%, varying by controller manufacturer — remained recoverable.
The TRIM command tells the storage controller which blocks are no longer considered valid, which lets the controller proactively clear that space during garbage collection rather than waiting for new data to overwrite it — meaning deleted data can be cleared out well before anything new is actually written. In other words, on modern flash storage, "not yet overwritten" no longer reliably means "still there."
Encryption changes the game entirely
Full-disk encryption is no longer permitted on new devices running Android 10 and higher; new devices use file-based encryption instead, and Android 7.0 and higher supports file-based encryption where different files can be encrypted with different keys that can be unlocked independently. Even if fragments of a deleted file's raw bits still exist somewhere in storage, without the correct cryptographic key that data is unreadable — not a puzzle to be pieced together, but genuinely inaccessible ciphertext.
Application sandboxing limits what any single app — including a recovery app — can even see
Modern mobile operating systems isolate each app's data from every other app by default. A recovery app installed after the fact typically cannot simply reach into another app's private storage area the way old-school desktop "undelete" tools could scan an entire disk.

Can Permanently Deleted Data Still Be Recovered?
Sometimes — but not reliably. Whether a specific deleted photo, video or file can come back depends on a chain of factors, roughly in this order of likelihood:
- Is it still inside "Recently Deleted" or a Trash/Bin? (Highest chance — official, one-tap recovery.)
- Does a cloud copy exist (Google Photos, iCloud Photos, Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox)?
- Does a device backup from before the deletion exist?
- Does another app (a messaging app, a scanner app) hold its own separate copy?
- Does an external copy exist (computer, SD card, USB drive, old phone, email, shared album)?
- Is professional forensic or data-recovery assistance realistic and justified for this case?
- If none of the above apply, the data may be genuinely, permanently unrecoverable.

What Digital Forensics Can and Cannot Recover
It's worth clearly separating two very different activities that get lumped together in casual conversation: consumer data recovery, and professional digital forensics.
Mobile device forensics is the science of recovering digital evidence from a mobile device under forensically sound conditions using accepted methods, and is a formally documented specialty within digital forensics. Guidance such as NIST Special Publication 800-101, Revision 1 lays out the methods, tools and procedures for recovering digital evidence from mobile devices in a forensically sound manner, describing both logical and physical extraction techniques as well as more invasive methods such as chip-off and JTAG acquisition, along with tool evaluation and legal/evidentiary considerations.
At a high level, a professional forensic examination may draw on:
- Forensically sound acquisition of the device (creating a verified copy rather than working on the original)
- Logical and file-system-level extraction
- Analysis of application artefacts and databases
- Recovered backups and cloud evidence obtained through lawful, authorised channels
- Deleted-file remnants, where technically still present and accessible
But forensic examiners are bound by the same physical and cryptographic realities as everyone else. Modern smartphones' encryption, secure hardware elements, and application sandboxing mean that some deleted data is simply no longer recoverable by anyone — forensic laboratories are not exempt from the laws of physics or cryptography. This article does not provide operational instructions for extracting data from a device that isn't the reader's own, or that they aren't authorised to examine; that work belongs to licensed professionals operating under proper legal authority.

- Do not factory-reset the device "just to see if it helps."
- Do not repeatedly install and uninstall recovery applications.
- Do not use the phone heavily for anything not related to recovery.
- Do not delete existing backups while you're troubleshooting.
- Do not disable standard security features to try to "unlock" recovery options.
- Do not trust software that guarantees "100% recovery."
- Do not hand an unlocked phone to an unknown or unverified third party.
- Do not assume a recovery method from a video made for a different phone will work on yours.
When Should You Contact a Professional?
Professional help is worth considering when:
- The lost files are irreplaceable (family photographs, milestone events)
- The data may be relevant to a legal matter or ongoing dispute
- Important business files or records are involved
- Lawful access is needed to a deceased person's digital records, through proper legal channels
- The device itself is physically damaged or the storage has failed
- The device is inaccessible (locked out, corrupted, or unresponsive)
- Backup configuration is complex enough that self-troubleshooting risks making things worse
📁 Data-recovery service vs. digital-forensic laboratory
These are not automatically the same thing. A general data-recovery service typically focuses on retrieving readable files from damaged or corrupted storage media as efficiently as possible. A digital-forensic laboratory follows documented chain-of-custody and forensically sound acquisition procedures — of the kind described in NIST SP 800-101 — because its output may need to hold up as evidence. If the data matters legally, ask specifically whether the provider follows forensically sound acquisition and documentation practices, not just whether they can "get the file back."

🔬 The Forensic Science Behind Deleted Data
File deletion is not instant physical destruction — but residual data is not guaranteed recoverability either. These two ideas sound contradictory; they aren't.
Several distinct layers are involved when a file is "deleted":
- Logical deletion — the reference to the file is removed from the index the operating system uses to show you your files.
- Metadata removal — information like filename, size, timestamps and thumbnails may be cleared separately from the file's actual content.
- Database records — many apps track media in their own internal databases, separate from the raw file itself.
- File-system references — the pointers that tell the storage layer where a file's data physically sits.
- Physical storage — the actual flash memory cells holding the data, subject to TRIM and garbage collection.
- Encryption — even where physical bits remain, without the correct key they are unreadable ciphertext.
- Cloud copies and backups — entirely separate storage locations, governed by their own independent retention rules.
A file can be logically deleted while still physically present; equally, it can be immediately garbage-collected at the physical layer the moment it's logically deleted. Which happens depends on the specific device, OS version, storage technology, and time elapsed — not on a single universal rule.

Q. I emptied Recently Deleted on my iPhone by accident. Is there any way to get the photo back?
Officially, no — once an item is removed from Recently Deleted (or the 30-day window has passed), Apple's consumer recovery tools cannot bring it back. Your best remaining option is checking whether the photo exists in an older device backup, on another synced Apple device, or in any external copy (emailed, shared, or saved elsewhere).
Q. My Android phone doesn't seem to have a Trash or Recycle Bin at all. Why not?
Not every Android app or manufacturer implements one, and older Android versions may lack it entirely for certain apps. Check Google Photos' Trash and, separately, Files by Google's Trash, plus any manufacturer-specific gallery app trash — the feature exists in several places, not one universal location.
Q. Will a factory reset make my phone "un-hackable" and delete everything forever?
A factory reset removes access through the normal operating system and is one of the reasons this guide advises against doing it while you're still trying to recover something — but it should not be treated as a certified, forensically secure erasure method on its own. If secure data destruction is your actual goal (for example, before selling or disposing of a device), follow your device manufacturer's documented secure-erase guidance.

That depends entirely on the photo's value to you and your budget — there's no universal answer. For a single, low-stakes photo, working through the checklist above is usually sufficient. For irreplaceable images, legal evidence, or business-critical files, professional help is a reasonable next step once the free/official options are exhausted.
